Why the Pearl is the most amazing gem…read on

Pearls (in my opinion) are the most amazing gem you can come across. Why? Because they come out of the shell in perfect condition, with no polishing or faceting required, and are available in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes more than any other gem.

Pearls have been worn for ages, with some of the first pieces of pearl jewelry dating back to Ancient Egypt, and its mythology is found in numerous cultures around the world. The ancient Greeks believed that pearls were the hardened tears of joy from Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Some Chinese legends say that pearls were formed inside the brains of dragons. In Arabian legend, they are said to be created from hardened moon drops. Today, even though we know much more about pearls, they are still mysterious to us.

By the way Happy Birthday to all the June babies out there!

June is one of only two months that has three birthstones associated with it, giving the lucky people born in June a choice of gemstones between PEARL, Alexandrite and Moonstone. In this post we focus on Pearls which are also given on the 1st, 3rd, 12th and 30th anniversaries.

How are pearls are formed?  Pearls grow inside mollusks such as oysters and mussels when an irritant such as a tiny stone or bit of sand gets inside the mollusk’s shell. This process of building a solid pearl in nature can take up to seven or eight years. Whereas, cultured pearls takes only 2 weeks to 3 months to grow.

The most valuable pearls are perfectly symmetrical, relatively large and naturally produced. Pearls are one of few gems not measured by carats. Luster is the most important aspect of choosing a pearl. The finest pearls are metallic and reflective like mirrors.

Pearls can range in size from 3mm to 13mm. Because pearls do not require polishing or faceting like most gems, finding a pair of pearls that match perfectly in size, color and luster can be more difficult—and more expensive. A matched strand of natural pearls may sell for hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of dollars.

Only gem experts with specific gemological X-ray equipment can distinguish natural pearls from cultured pearls. Natural pearls consist entirely of concentric growth rings, while cultured pearls have a solid nucleus of the bead or shell that was implanted to stimulate pearl production.

Here’ a list of the many types of pearls:
natural pearls are made without human interference
cultured pearls
was first used in 1893 and is made when a foreign substance is intentionally inserted into a living oyster
baroque pearls are pearls that have irregular shapes
biwa pearls are an irregular shaped pearl which forms in the freshwater of Lake Biwa, Japan
blister pearls are grow attached to the inside of the shell
black pearls are gray to black pearls
freshwater pearls form in fresh water mollusks and look like puffed rice
mabe pearls are cultivated blister pearls
seed pearls are small, tiny pearls

What color are pearls? They vary in color from white to pink, brown or black.

How to care for pearls?  They are very sensitive to extreme heat, acids, dryness, and humidity so care should be taken when storing pearls.

Where do they harvest pearls? Natural pearls from the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Manaar (Indian Ocean), and the Red Sea were harvested for thousands of years. The coasts of Polynesia and Australia produce mainly cultured pearls. Both freshwater and saltwater pearls are cultivated in Japan and China. Freshwater pearls occur in the rivers of Scotland, Ireland, France, Austria, Germany, and the USA (Mississippi)

When you say “I do” say “yes” to pearls too: As ancient symbols of purity and innocence, pearls are traditionally worn by a bride on her wedding day—making pearl jewelry a great gift to celebrate a bride-to-be or a 1st, 3rd, 12th or 30th anniversary.

Here is summary and more interesting facts:

  1. Pearls are the only jewels created by a living animal. A natural pearl of value is found in less than 1 in every 10,000 wild oysters.
  2. All pearl oysters are born male and transform into females at around three years of age.
  3. There are three major types of saltwater cultured pearls: Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea. These pearls account for approximately 5% of the total weight of global pearl production.
  4. Freshwater pearls account for approximately 95% of total global pearl production but are much less valuable than saltwater pearls. China produces the majority of freshwater pearls in pearl farms and typically produce between 30 and 50 pearls at a time.
  5. Even with cultivation practices, South Sea pearls are really rare. To compare, the weight of diamond production each year is 10 times greater than the weight of the Australian South Sea pearls harvest each year.
  6. Pearl oysters are also used for their shell (known as mother-of-pearl) and their meat.
  7. The earliest record we have of pearls as precious objects are artefacts from Mesopotamia dated to around 2300 B.C.
  8. Recently, a two thousand year old pearl was found in an Australian Aboriginal archaeological dig in Western Australia.
  9. La Peregrina (Spanish for ‘the incomparable’) is one of the most famous pearls in the world. The 500-year-old pearl is the size of a large pigeon’s egg. Its previous owners included a King of Spain, Napoleon Bonaparte and Elizabeth Taylor.
  10. In the early days, pearl divers regularly faced shark attacks as well as the bends when diving and the mortality rate for divers was as high as 50 per cent. Today, there are strict protocols and regulations regarding occupational diving to reduce these risks. Stop by the 黄色啪啪视频,免费啪啪视频 to shop pearls, restring your current strand or appraise heirloom pearls you might have inherited.

Earth Day should be Every Day

For 47 years, Earth Day has inspired individuals to renew their commitment to environmental protection. People around the world get together to celebrate nature, get educated on environmental issues and learn how to live greener lives. A good time for contemplation and for making some small but significant changes.

            Reinventing the old

One way to be “green,” that can include being eco-conscious is upcycling or repurposing your old jewelry.

“Upcycling” is  taking something old and creating something new out of it.

Give cherished family heirlooms new life

Upcycle jewelry for Earth Day by cleaning out your jewelry box and finding ways to revitalize your treasures. If you’re able to bring new life to an old piece of jewelry, you’ll feel good about doing something good for the Earth.

We all know what the basis of Recycling is: a practice that takes an item and targets it for reuse, returning it back to the cycle of daily contribution to society rather than discarding it to trash. Think plastic bottles turned into carpet, toys or fleece.

Upcycling is described as reusing a material without degrading the quality and composition of the material for its next use.  The possibilities are endless with redesigning jewelry. Engagement rings can be turned into pendant necklaces, as can brooches and watches. Necklaces can be formed into earrings, rings, bracelets etc.

Jewelry is meant to be worn, so reinventing an older, heirloom into a piece of new jewelry that reflects your taste makes it more likely that you’ll wear it, and is a great way to keep the memories of loved ones alive.

Even cost-conscious and environmentally friendly brides are even choosing upcycled wedding dresses, which use old dresses to create new ones or accessories. It’s a great way to treasure family heirlooms while incorporate your own personal style.

Here are a few tips and ideas to help breathe new life into an older piece of jewelry:

1. Wear it in a new way. Take an old chunky necklace and wrap it around your wrist instead and it becomes a bracelet. How about using a brooch as a hair ornament or pendant. Pierced or clip earrings, either single or a pair, can be attached to a jacket as a decorative accent.

2. Reimagine an old piece. If pieces that are too small, fragile, or damaged to be worn such as a dainty diamond watch that is too small for the wrist or a vintage diamond brooch, think about attaching to a wide gold cuff.

3. Turn a larger piece of jewelry into several smaller ones. The gems in a statement necklace can become earrings. Diamonds in a large cocktail ring or brooch could be used to make a pendant with matching earrings, etc.

4. Change the metal. A colorless diamond set in platinum or white gold band will make the diamond appear whiter and give the piece a contemporary feel.

5. Repurpose the gemstones in a new piece. Mount them in a new piece of your own desigm and create a piece of jewelry that will become an heirloom for future generations that still has ties to the past. You can also divide the gemstones among siblings and other loved ones, so everyone can share the memories, and create their own heirlooms.

If you decide to remove the gems from a piece, consider sending them to an independent laboratory like GIA for examination, before having them reset. A diamond grading report, or gemological report for colored stones, will document what the stone is, whether it is natural or synthetic and if there are any detectable treatments. This information is key for the appraiser to determine the stones’ value for appraisal and insurance purposes; In addition, knowing how the gems were treated will help the jeweler determine the best way to handle the stones during setting, repair and cleaning.

6. Make it fresh and wearable again. Sometimes all a piece of heirloom jewelry needs is a “tune up”. Bring in your vintage or antique treasure to make sure no gemstones are loose and to give it a proper cleaning. The piece may have a patina (oxidized film) that you may or may not want removed.

Even if you don’t own any heirloom jewelry, you can always acquire a piece that was preowned. Just follow these GIA tips for purchasing estate jewelry. These treasures can be restored or reimagined to create your own piece of history and become a memento to pass on to loved ones.

ROSE QUARTZ and SERENITY BLUE are Pantone Color(s) of the Year

Influenced by the world of art, new global doors opening and the desire to disconnect from technology and unwind, designers this season have gravitated toward a palette that is calming.

Other inspirations include “the contrast of urban design and lush vegetation, leading to unexpected color combinations and collections reminiscent of architecture, travel, and nostalgia.”

“With our culture still surrounded by so much uncertainty, we are continuing to yearn for those softer shades that offer a sense of calm and relaxation, both of which focus on a desire to breathe and reflect, then play.”

These 2016 colors are more about letting the softer side of you emerge.  Maybe the whole world needs to remember that strength is terrific, but softness is beautiful too.

Purple & Blue

Gems
The birthstones for February and March are a few of our favorites: Amethyst and Aquamarine.
Amethyst comes in shades of purple and is almost as popular as the classics: ruby, sapphire and emerald. In fact it is related to the emerald, both belonging to the beryl family.
The word amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos,” translated as “not drunken.”

Amethyst-blog
The Greeks believed Amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle in the belief that amethysts heal people and keep them cool-headed.
It is used as a dream stone and to help insomnia. Put an Amethyst under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to offer relief from a headache.

Amethyst Morganite
Ancient Egyptians used Amethyst to guard against guilty and fearful feelings.
Amethyst is a gemstone often worn by healers, as it has the power to focus energy and also used for problems in the blood and in breathing problems. Amethyst crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive.

aquamarine and sapphire necklace

Turing to March, the birthstone is Aquamarine and comes in shades of pale blue to a strong sea-blue. It gets its color from Iron.
The more intense the color of an Aquamarine, the more value is put on it. Some aquamarines have a light, greenish shimmer. However, it is a pure, clear blue that is typical of aquamarine, because it brings out so well the perfect transparency and magnificent shine of this gemstone.

aquamarine ring
Many Aquamarine are almost entirely free of inclusions. Aquamarine has good hardness (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) and a wonderful shine. That hardness makes it very tough and protects it to a large extent from scratches.

The International color authority, Pantone announced that the 2015 Color of the Year is “Marsala, a naturally robust and earthy wine red.”

“Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability. Marsala is a subtly seductive shade, one that draws us in to its embracing warmth.”

It’s already hit the runways and you’ll see lots of this color coming this year. If you plan on investing in Marsala-colored fashions, try pairing with grays, pinks and pale blues. Also neutrals like taupe, golden yellow and green-blue such as turquoise and teal, and will all complement Marsala.

If you’re not ready to invest in too much of the color, you can also just accessorize with Pantone’s Color of the Year, with shoes, pillows, or our favorite:  jewelry.
